A Pain Behind the Eyes
Desperate.
“Are you going to answer my questions or what?”
Scared.
“He’s got multiple stab wounds, we need to get them treated!”
Hurt.
“Load him into the ambulance.”
A criminal.
“Turn yourself in.”
A killer.
“She’s dead~”
Astor Spade opened his eyes. Save for the soft beeping of the EKG heart monitor, it was deathly quiet. It took him a few moments to come to his senses. Looking around, he could see… white. Mostly white. In the distance, muffled conversations being made as men and women in white coats stalked up and down the corridor as he could see from an open door. It clicked in his mind. He’d been taken to the hospital.

He stopped short as he looked at the stitches on his arms. Looking down, stitches in his chest. He’d been cut. But by what? Then it suddenly flashed across his mind.The girl. The fight. The dagger. The laughing. The demon. The devil.
( It… it wasn’t a dream… the one thing that… HAD to be a nightmare, just a wretched, horrible nightmare… … …wasn’t. )

Astor dropped his head back onto the pillow in despair. His career was over. Prison was in his future. What would his friends think? What would his colleagues think?
…what would Joy think…?
He knew what was going to happen. He’d be allowed a short time to recover… then it was off to the detention center. Stand trial. Be found guilty of SOME form of murder or manslaughter or whatever. And maybe he’d see the light of day again when he was finished serving his sentence. Maybe.
Or he would get the death penalty.
He squeezed his eyes shut as he contemplated that last bit, trying desperately to fall back into that sleep and never wake up again.
For a man who had fought so hard to stay alive against the demon called Dahlia, all Astor Spade wanted to do now was die.
